March has been an incredibly expensive month for me, to the point that I'm having to sink into my overdraft to pay for the crazy costs of this month. Even with that, today, I am going to make a donation to the Red Cross and I encourage each and everyone of you to find 5 or 10 dollars and donate it to LEGITIMATE charities which have existed longer than the length of this catastrophe. This earthquake was powerful enough to shift not only Japan's coast line but the actual land mass 2.4 meters (8 feet) and shift the earth's axis by 4 inches!
Tens of thousands of people are missing in Japan right now; tens of thousands more are surviving on little water and one rice ball a day; they are living in fear of the aftershocks, in fear of the radiation which is leaking into the air and can spread much further than a blast zone. They need money, medical supplies are running low and aid can't get there fast enough. Hundreds of millions of people are living in fear every minute of their lives.
This was a major economy still struggling to recover, still on the verge of collapse, the stock markets are crashing aorund them and they have having in influx billions of dollars just to handle what is going on right now. Heaven knows what they will have to do if they have a full nuclear meltdown.
Please, do what you can. Prayers only go so far, just $5 will go much, much farther than good wishes and sad feelings. $5 means you don't need to feel helpless, hopeless or down right shitty about it.
(In case you're wondering, no, I'm not Asian. I'm 11th Generation Canadian with family previously from Ireland. I have no ties to Japan, no friends, no family. Though, they did give us Sephiroth and you have to love them for that )
It's more support and awareness than it is financial, but I believe it's still something. The five dollars is by far more practical, and I get that, but for those who have to pinch themselves, this is one way to make your wishes known.
I was thrilled and relieved, however, to hear from one friend that her grandfather was alive and well to the south of the quake, along with his cousins and the majority of her mom's side of the family. Little miracles are precious, but we could do with some big ones, too...
Agreed. I posted a link containing a list of legit charities and organizations in one of my journals the other day -- and then today, I found this...
